Reserve League begins in 2010/2011 season

Accra, Aug. 18, GNA - The 2010/2011 football season will witness the commencement of the Reserve League by all participating Clubs of the Premier League.

The decision to organize a Reserve League, which falls under the ambit of the Ghana Football Association's (GFA) vision towards the development of football at the youth level, was unanimously approved during the Extraordinary Congress of the GFA on Wednesday.

Congress, the legislative and supreme organ of the GFA without any hesitation voted unanimously for the Reserve League to take place with effect from the impending season.

It was also adopted for every Premier Club to register at least 20 players below 20-years for the competition, to be played in honour of Justice (Rtd) A.K.B Ampiah, former President of the GFA Congress.

Congress, however, approved the zoning of the participating Clubs in the Reserve League to reduce the financial headache it will have on the Clubs.

The choice of zoning was also backed by the Premier League Board and the Ghana League Clubs Association, who were ably represented by Welbeck Abra Appiah and Emmanuel Adotey respectively.

The 16 Premier Clubs based on their geographical locations were housed into two sectors made up of the Southern and Northern Zones.

Ashantigold, Heart of Lions, Hearts of Oak, Liberty Professionals, Medeama SC, New Edubiase, Tudu Mighty Jets and Dwarfs make up the Southern Zone; whilst defending League champions Aduana Stars, Asante Kotoko, Berekum Arsenal, Berekum Chelsea, Brong Ahafo Stars, King Faisal, Real Tamale United and Wa All Stars constitute the Northern Zone.

It was also approved that a maximum of three players above 20-years would be eligible to feature in every Reserve League, with the fixtures to be determined by the PLB.

Other modalities in the Reserve League includes the eligibility of players to feature for the senior side (Premier League) and 50-percent charge on the Premier League suspensions and other offences.
