Richard Commey Claims Commonwealth Title

Ghana’s Richard Commey, 27, has claimed the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title with a unanimous points victory over Welshman Gary Buckland in London over the weekend.

The ABU lightweight and IBF Continental African lightweight title holder was for the first time in his professional career taken the distance having won all his previous 17 fights inside eight rounds. He however won big on the judges' cards - 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110 - at Bethnal Green's York Hall.

Mr Danny Okai, Osibisa Radio sports correspondent who was reporting live on Osibisa Radio from the boxing arena during the fight described Commey as “a must watch rising and shining star in Ghana’s boxing, a boxer with stamina and skill capable of going far in his career”.

The early rounds went the way of Buckland, who was looking to avoid back-to-back defeats following a split-decision loss to Gavin Rees in May.

Richard took full charge of the fight from round six after the early rounds speared to have gone the way of his opponent. He took full charge of the centre of the ring landing a number of body shots on Gary Buckland. Even though Commey was unable to land his hallmark “telling blow” to knock his opponent out, his dominance and Sterling performance in the ring proved too much for Gary who nevertheless becomes the first boxer to take Commey the full 12 rounds. .
