Richard Ofori commended for turning down Mamelodi Sundowns

Richard Ofori seems to have made a good choice by turning down a move to South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns to Martizburg United.

After a successful trial with Sundowns in 2017, the Ghana number one was set to receive an offer from the reigning PSL Champions.

Ofori who was 23 then would have played behind Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene at the Club, a situation which forced him to look elsewhere.

He eventually accepted an offer from Maritzburg United joining from former Ghana Champions WA All Stars.

“He made a good choice, because they (Sundowns) had Denis Onyango and there was also Kennedy (Mweene). But I would always choose Richie over Kennedy,” said Ronnie Kanalelo, who was Ofori’s goalkeeper trainer at Maritzburg.

“Three years so – that time Richie went for trials at Sundowns – I think it was Onyango and Kennedy (playing) all the time. He (Ofori) wouldn’t be where he is at the moment (if he went to Sundowns). The move would have derailed his progress,” the ex-Sundowns keeper told the Siya crew.

The 26-year-old after spending three years in the South African Premier League has become one of the best, attracting interests from the likes of Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns who are back knocking on the doors of the former Ghana U20 goalkeeper.
