Richmond Boakye suffers head injury

A stoppage time aerial challenge with Granada goalkeeper Roberto, left Elche striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom unconscious on the ground.

Deep into injury time as Elche were trailing by a single goal in their game against Granada, the home side were throwing everything forward. A long ball forward saw Richmond Boakye leap to challenge Granada goalkeeper Roberto for the ball, but the Elche striker came out worse from the clash.

Collapsing to the floor, players from both sides quickly signalled to the referee and physiotherapists from both teams rushed onto the field, to attend the player.

Laying still and unconscious on the pitch, the physiotherapists checked to ensure he hadn’t swallowed his tongue. Thankfully he hadn’t and as soon as a stretcher arrived, he was promptly carried from the field of play.

Elche later announced that the player has suffered a severe concussion injury and has been taken to a nearby hospital, for further examination. Whilst they don’t currently believe the situation to be serious, they’re awaiting further confirmation from the hospital, as to the extent of his injury and Boakye will remain there overnight.
