SIC donates Gh¢10,000 towards May 9 anniversary celebration

SIC Insurance Company Limited on Tuesday donated a Gh¢10,000 cheque to the Ministry of Youth and Sports towards the 11th Anniversary of the May 9 Stadium Disaster.

The cash donation is to assist in the planning of an event to highlight the prevention of a recurrence of such an incident that marks the worst in the history of Ghana football.

Clement Kofi Humado, Minister of Youth and Sports said the objective of marking the painful stadium incident annually provides an opportunity to evaluate mechanisms put in place to avert future occurrences.

He said the Ministry has put in place security measures as well as taking into consideration the concern of spectators towards guarding against similar disasters in the unforeseeable future.

Nana Yaw Mantey, Head of Corporate Affairs of SIC Insurance Company Limited, said the gesture confirms the partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports towards organising the May 9 Memorial.

He announced that his outfit has introduced a Stadium Personal Accident Policy (SPAP) that will insure spectators who throng the various stadia.

Meanwhile, the Black Starlets (national U-17 team) and Black Satellites (national U-20 team) will engage in a charity match on Wednesday, May 9, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Over 100 fans lost their lives with scores injured during a Premier League match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium on May 9, 2001.**
