SWAG and GBA congrtulate Richard Commey

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) Media Committee have sent congratulatory messages to Ghana's new international boxing hero, Richard Commey after his heroic and historic feat of winning the vacant Commonwealth Lightweight crown after defeating Gary Buckland in the United Kingdom.
SWAG Deputy General Secretary Sammy Heywood Okine who is also a member of the Media Committee of the GBA said the achievement by Commey was very laudable as it came at a time when Ghanaians were crying over the poor display of the Black Stars at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
He said boxing can make bigger name for the nation if the boxers are given the much needed encouragement and motivation, as there are other very good boxers who can perform like Commey.
He said boxing was the first sport to give the nation honours at world level when D.K. Poison won the World Featherweight Championship in 1975. Professor Azumah Nelson also held the World Featherweight and Super Featherweight for almost a decade and has been inducted in the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
GBA President Peter Zwennes noted that the achievement of Commey testifies that after all Ghana Sports is not dead and boxing has the potential to give the nation more world beaters.
According to him. the big fight by Ayitey Powers and Bukom Banku also proved that so many people love boxing in Ghana and urged promoters to come up with bouts that would expose Ghanaian boxers and entertain the public.
Zwennes who was in Brazil to cheer the Black Stars believes there are many boxers who can put smiles on the faces of Ghanaians and called for support to build a boxing hall to host big fights in Ghana.
