Accra, March 28, GNA - Disability Option - Ghana, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) would hold the second Disabled Sports Competition on April 5 at Mantse Abgona in Accra.
The competition, which is opened to all disabled persons, is aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of persons with disability. The participants are expected to compete for honours in disciplines such as blind and death football, tricycle and bicycle race and table tennis.
Madam Ann Doe, President of Disability Option- Ghana, who launched the event in Accra on Friday, said the decision by his outfit to organize the competition for the disabled was to draw public concern and erase the societal neglect of the disabled, which she said had affected their strive towards socio-economic quest.
"It is against this backdrop that Disability Option-Ghana has taken a challenge on itself to bring together the disabled from far and near through the power of sports." She stated. She said the programme is among the numerous achievements chalked by her organization over the past year to involve the society in various activities.
According to Madam Doe, her outfit has succeeded in providing support for disabled persons to take part in sporting activities. Madam Doe said the NGO also supported the National Amputee team to participate in a competition in Sierra Leone as part of preparations towards the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and also supported the team to attend a Sports Clinic in Holland.
She added that Disability Option-Ghana has also provided assistance to the National Disabled team to participate in the Sydney and the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
She expressed appreciation to the Ghana Cement Company (Ghacem), Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Interplast and Anglogold Ashanti for their support. 28 March 08
