The Dormaa Multipurpose Sports Complex, which cost the country seven million cedis to construct has been left to rot.

The project, started in 2018 and expected to be completed a year later, has been abandoned since 2020 and is now a breeding ground for pests and other mammals.

A visit by Happy 98.9FM to the facility showed that the FIFA standard pitch, which was supposed to be used for football, is overgrown with weeds, and trees are sprouting up from the center of the pitch.

The areas demarcated as running tracks have also deteriorated as plants have taken over the entire area.

The spectator stands are the only part of the project that has been completed at the facility, with washrooms still in good condition.

The Dormaa Multipurpose Sports Complex was the seventh out of ten Multipurpose Youth Resource Sports Complexes that the government started in 2017.

Like the other projects, the Dormaa Multipurpose Sports Complex was supposed to house a FIFA standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, floodlights, a Counselling Centre, an ICT/Entrepreneur Centre, a Modern Restaurant, a Maintenance Unit, and Washrooms.

The seven million cedis project was commissioned by the Youth and Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah.

Meanwhile, the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, named after Ghana’s boxing legend, is also facing a similar fate as the project has been abandoned.

The renovation of the facility, which was estimated to cost GH₵4 million, is in a deplorable state, with the facility also turned into a forest.
