Nigeria international Asisat Oshoala arrived in Ghana for the African Women Cup of Nations and on Friday she apparently declared Nigeria 2018 AWCON champions already.
The Nigerians have won the competition record 10 times if the first two editions of 1991 and 1995 are counted but Ghana’s Sherifatu Sumaila – voted Woman of the match in Black Queens 1-0 victory over Algeria – has responded to the comments made by the Nigerian superstar.
“Well if that is what Oshoala is saying that they have won the competition already then we tell them to wait for us,” Sumaila told FootballmadeinGhana.com on Saturday.
“We are working towards lifting the trophy on home soil and we know we can do it. So they (Nigeria) should watch out for us.” Sumaila confidently added.
Oshoala, who has won three African Women’s Player of the year awards, seemingly declared Nigeria champions of this year’s AWCON beforehand but the Black Queens winger says she and her teammates are poised to win the title.
“Every time you see Nigeria, you know there is no other competitor, we are here to win the trophy,” she told ESPN.
“We are here to make our nation proud once more, the girls are ready to give 100 percent at every point in time.”
Ghana and Nigeria could possibly meet each other in the quarterfinals should both teams qualify to the next round with one of them being runner-up in their group and the other finishing as group winner.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons start their tournament against South Africa at 15:30GMT on Sunday at the Cape Coast stadium.
