Six-day Taekwondo training course opens in Sekondi

Essipong, (W/R) Aug. 2, GNA - A six-day coaching clinic for Taekwando Instructors and Coaches drawn from the Western Region opened at the Sekondi Sports Stadium on Monday.

The course is being organized by the World Taekwando Federation (WTF) in collaboration with the Ghana Taekwando Association (GTA).

Five visiting Taekwando Peace Corps from the Republic of South Korea are the Course Directors and are providing equipment for the course.

The participants include coaches and instructors of Taekwando Clubs from the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and the Ahanta West, Wassa Amefi West and Shama Districts as well as the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality as well as physical education instructors from the Ghana Armed Forces and other security services.

Mr Chris Essilfie, Vice Chairman of GTA said the course forms part of the technical support for the promotion of the sports in the Region and to popularize the sport.

He said Taekwando has health and physical benefits to the practitioner and should be popularized as it is deemed as a lesser known sport.

Mr Essilfie said the sport could also help promote discipline among the youth and members of the society and should be recognized and patronized by the general public.

Mr Beresford Amui, Regional Sports Development Officer thanked the South Korean Ambassador for assisting to obtain the services of the resource persons for the course.

He said there was the need to promote other lesser known sports and hoped a course on Karate would soon be organized to promote it in the Region.
