Accra, Sept 04, GNA - Soccer Mountaineers, Okwawu United, will after Thursday's 19th week home encounter against Real Tamale United (RTU) at the Accra Sports Stadium revert to their roots to honour the rest of their home matches at the Mpreso Brighton Park.

In an interview with the GNA Sports on Thursday, Mr Odura Nyarko, Board Secretary of the club said the move is ostensibly to allow the indigenous supporters of the club who have been deprived of watching their team for the past two and half years to see them in action.

He said this will also to cut down on the cost of traveling and the fatigue of the players who are forced to move down every week from their Mpreaso camping base to Accra to for matches.

Mr Oduro Nyarko said the Mpraeso Brighton Park, constructed in the mid 60's, is presently 75 percent grass and is in a better condition than most of the pitches used by some of the teams in the premiership.

He said they planned moving to Mpraeso at the start of the second round of the league but had to shelve the plan due to the unavailability of certain facilities like an inner perimeter to separate supporters from the players as required by the Professional League Board (PLB)

"Presently due to the benevolence Mr Kwame Ofosu Bamfo (Sikkens) work is going on feverishly on the construction of the inner perimeter and some other facilities to make the place suitable for our 21st week match against Liberty Professionals.

"Playing at Accra is not like playing at home where the supporters are sentimentally attached to the team hence they go all out in their support." Mr Nyarko dismissed claims that the move to Mpraeso was to ensure that away teams are intimidated to enable them win the remainder of their home matches to ensure that they stay in the premiership.

He said at Mpraeso it would be easy to control our fans since we know that almost everybody who comes to Mpraeso is an Okwawu supporters rather than the cosmopolitan Accra Sports Stadium were most people who watch our matches are not our supporters.

"Recently in our match against Brong Ahafo United at the Accra Sports Stadium a fan threw ice water bags unto the field and we have been punished by the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association"

Mr Nyarko also said the move would ease pressure on the Accra Sports Stadium pitch which is now developing patches as a result its overuse.

Okwawu who are currently occupying the bottom position of the 16-team premier league with 14 points moved their home grounds from the Nkawkaw Park, which was then under reconditioning. 4 Sept 03
