Ghanaians have taken to social media to express their excitement over an assurance by Cassiel Ato Forson, President John Mahama’s nominee for Minister of Finance that the betting tax will be abolished.
During his vetting on Monday, January 13, 2025, Ato Forson disclosed that the tax generated minimal revenue for Ghana’s economy and, as such, its removal would not pose a significant problem to the government.
The news has sparked various reactions among Ghanaians online. With the majority opposing the betting tax, the suggestion has been met with widespread cheers as they eagerly anticipate its cancellation.
Others, however, have expressed astonishment upon learning about the revenue the betting tax brought to the government.
President John Mahama, during his campaign, promised to abolish the betting tax introduced by the then NPP government. The overwhelming support for scrapping the tax highlights how unpopular it has been among Ghanaians.

Betting tax is bringing in less than GHC 50m a year. Scrapping it won't harm the economy 🔥🔥🔥🔥
