Andre Ayew’s uncle, Sola Ayew is rooting for the Olympique
Marseille forward to be crowned GLO-CAF African footballer of the year after
the final five shortlist was unveiled in Accra on Friday.
CAF Executive Committee Member and Ghana Football
Association President, Kwesi Nyantakti unveiled Ayew along with last year’s
winner, Yaya Toure, 2-time winner Didier Drogba, Senegal hitman Demba Ba and
new Barcelona recruit Alexandre Song as the last five standing.
This was after an initial 10-man shortlist was whittled down
following voting by national team captains and coaches of CAF member countries.
For the second straight year, the son of former winner,
Abedi Pele is the only Ghanaian to make it thus far in the awards which also
for the second straight year, returns to Accra on December 20.
And Sola is backing the 22 year old crowned BBC winner of
the same award last year, to brave the odds and become the first Ghanaian to
win the award since his father two decades ago.
“It’s a matter of people making their choice and people like
us think it’s his time but someone may think otherwise. For me, I think it’s
time for them to give Andre the award,” Sola told 90 MINUTES.
The former Hearts of Oak player added: “I spoke to one or
two people and they thought the Ivory Coast guys are favourites but if you ask
me I will say Dede deserves it. They have to give it to him to encourage young
African players doing well like him.”
The annual award sponsored by communications giants, Glo for
the past eight years returns to the Banquet Hall of State House in Accra, the
same venue of last year’s awards ceremony and unprecedented 4th time
overall in the Ghanaian capital.
