Ghanaian boxer Richard Commey has issued a passionate apology to his fans and Ghanaians in general after failing to defend his IBF Lightweight title against Teofimo Lopez over the weekend.

Commey took to social media site Twitter to render an unqualified apology, admitting that the defeat has been hard to take.

“I would just thank everybody for all the kind words of support, this is a very hard defeat for me to take but I will be back stronger and better than ever, sorry for letting all my fans down but I will learn from my mistake and be a world champion again ???????????????????????? God bless you all!

Lopez has become the new champion of the IBF Lightweight division after handing Commey a round 2 technical knockout.

Commey was hit by a powerful right punch from Lopez in the second minute of the bout which was followed by a flurry of punches which ended the Ghanaian boxer’s title defence.

In his first post-bout interview, Commey said he was caught surprised by Lopez’s quality.

Commey who admitted to making mistakes in the bout, promised to go back to the ‘drawing board’ and work on his weaknesses which were highlighted in the bout.

“Honestly if I told you that I would get hit and go down like that, I will be telling you a lie. I’ve got bigger shows than Lopez and that’s surprised me but this is it. It happens. Sometimes what you feel will kill you will never kill you but the things that you don’t expect. All I have to do now is go back to the drawing board and comeback stronger.

Meanwhile Lopez has now set sights on fighting lightweight star Vasiliy Lomachenko.

“You guys know who I want,” he said, referring to Lomacheno without naming him. “2020, it’ll be going down, but as of right now, I’m gonna finish the year enjoying life. I’m more than an athlete. That goes for every athlete out there.”
