'Specs Man' Criticisms: Why Benjamin Azamati ‘must’ wear glasses when running

Ghanaian sports journalist Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo has shed light on why athlete Benjamin Azamati must wear glasses during athletic events.

He revealed that Azamati is sponsored by the men's eyewear company Oakley, which requires him to wear their glasses at various competitions.

Wearing the glasses helps promote the product internationally, making it essential for Azamati to wear them when necessary.

Fentuo, reporting from the Olympic Games in Paris, urged people mocking Azamati by calling him 'Specs Man' to stop and instead support him to perform better at the Olympics.

“Azamati is sponsored by the men's eyewear company Oakley. The contract requires him to wear these running glasses at some major meets. It’s not just for the fun of it. It’s not easy in the track world to get sponsorship.

"He’s worked hard to secure this one, funds from which he’s able to use to support his training to come and compete for Ghana. If anything, he deserves encouragement, not trolling. Stop calling him'specs man’,” the journalist wrote on his X page on August 7, 2024.

This statement comes after some social media users mocked Azamati for wearing glasses following his failure to qualify for the finals of the men's 100m race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
