High-flying Ghanaian basketball club, Spintex Knights, are appealing to the government and corporate entities for support as they prepare for the Elite 16 stage of the prestigious Basketball Africa League (BAL).

Earlier this month, Spintex Knights made history as the first Ghanaian team to reach the Elite 16 stage of the BAL after winning one of three matches played in Libya.

Addressing a press conference after their arrival from the tournament, Co-owner of Spintex Knights, Dr. Eric Opoku, recounted the struggles the team went through to raise money for the tournament in Libya.

He paid special tribute to his church, mother, and NASCO for their incredible support but appealed to corporate Ghana to come to the aid of the team.

Dr. Eric Opoku stated that support from the government or corporate entities would go a long way to boost the team as they prepare to make history in the competition, which will be held in Ivory Coast.

He stated that basketball has the potential to contribute hugely to Ghana’s socio-economic development and that it is high time the government pays attention to the game.

Coach Selorm Thomas, whose technical prowess engineered the success of the team, disclosed the excitement of him and the players from their participation in the tournament.

He disclosed excitedly that the team went into the tournament with the sole aim of advancing to the next stage and that the qualification is the attainment of their goals.

Coach Selorm Thomas stated that the team will quickly switch focus to making more history in Ivory Coast.

He disclosed that the team picked up some great lessons in their defeats in the prelims and will improve their play in the Elite tournament.

Elvis Pobi Siaw, nicknamed ‘Arrow,’ stated that the players were disappointed with losing their second game but view their qualification as a great chance for redemption.

He is confident that the Spintex Knights are on the journey to competing at the highest basketball tournament on the continent.

James Amotoe, who emerged as the top scorer in the qualifying tournament, stated that he felt great with his accomplishment and will continue to work to chalk more personal and team honors.

The Round of 16 competition is scheduled for November 5 to November 10, 2024.
