Sporting activities mark observance of Tourism Day

Koforidua, Sept. 26, GNA - Sporting activities were held at Koforidua over the weekend to herald this year's national celebration of the World Tourism Day being observed in the Eastern Region. On Sunday, scores of security personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service, among others teamed-up with officials of the Ghana Tourist Board (GTB) to showcase the benefits of health-walk through the principal streets of Koforidua, the regional capital.

The groups later gathered at the Koforidua Sports Stadium where they engaged in many fun games including sack race and tug of war. Addressing the participants, the Eastern Regional Director of GTB, Mr Sampson Donkoh said the sporting activities were used as a springboard to sensitise the public on the various forms of transportation and how they complement the development and promotion of tourism.

It was also meant to draw the attention of the local communities to the importance of tourism in elevating the economic, social and cultural livesof the people.

The Ghana Prisons soccer team beat their Fire Service counterparts two nil to lift the football trophy.

The Police squad made up for their shortcomings in the soccer match by defeating Fire Service in the tug-of-war duel while the male team of the Police also grabbed the sack race with its Health Walk Club grabbing the women's slot.

Other activities lined-up for the celebrations include a seminar for transport owners in the Region and holding of a durbar at Adasewase in the Atiwa District on Tuesday to be addressed by Papa Owusu Ankomah, Minister of Interior.
