Sports Festival ends

Nnerebehi Integrated Community Centre for Employable Skills (ICCES) emerged the overall best team in a two-day Ashanti Regional Inter-ICCES Sports Festival held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

They emerged winners in both the boys and girls volleyball competition by beating Konkonma and Baworo 2-1 in both games.

In the soccer competition, Tetrefu and Duase Praaso won in the boys and girls competitions respectively. They both beat Twedie and Nnerebehi one goal each. In all, nine out of the 10 ICCES in the region took part in the competition, which was the second to be held in the region.

It was organised with the help of the British Union of North American Club (BUNAC) volunteers. Among the centres that participated in the games were Samfo Aduam, Duase Praaso, Jacobu, Konkonma, Twedie, Baworo, Otaakrom, Tetrefu and Nnerebehi.

Francesca Sanders of BUNAC and a coordinator of the games expressed appreciation for the successful games. She said a lot of these centres are based in villages and that the students have never seen the city before, hence the thought to let them see the university campus to serve as a motivation for them to strive and progress in their education to the university level.

She expressed appreciation that the games were successful since most of the students had fun and made new friends from the other centres.

Earlier at the opening ceremony, Mr Apraku Mensah, Director of ICCES, commended the Ashanti Region for setting the pace to promote sports in the ICCES. He announced that a national sports festival will be organised next year to draw public attention to the ICCES. Mr Mensah advised the students to be disciplined.

Nana Boateng, Ashanti Regional Coordinator of ICCES, said the festival was to unearth talents in the training centres and also foster greater relationship among students and staff of the centres.

He advised the students against indiscipline and warned that any student who misconducts himself will be severely punished.

He commended the KNUST and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for their assistance towards the festival.
