Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah says action will be taken against those who are alleged to have misappropriated funds during Ghana‘s bid to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

It has emerged that the Youth and Sports Ministry entered into a contract to pay US$525,000 as consultancy fee for the preparation of Ghana’s bid document for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Out of this amount, $68,000 has been paid leaving a balance of $456, 263 to be paid. In the end, Ghana failed in its bid to host the tournament.

According to the Auditor General’s Report, RICS Consult belonging to Mr Rex Danquah was sole-sourced for the preparation of the document without prior approval from the Public Procurement Authority.

The Auditor General’s report also says the Ministry could not provide them with the contract documents awarding RICS Consult Limited the consulting services.

“We have inaugurated our audit committee and tasked them to look into these matters, so they report to the minister when I appear in front of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, I will know what to say,” Asiamah said.

“Also, I have asked the audit team to get me all those capped in the financial indiscipline and financial malfeasance so that action is taken.

“That is the position of the auditor general’s report. Until it’s challenged by high court is seen as a financial malfeasance,” he added.
