Stakeholders urged to invest in women boxing

Kumasi, May 24, GNA - Mr Nuru Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Kids Promotions has called on philanthropists, corporate bodies and stakeholders in boxing to commit enough resources into the development of women boxing and not to consider the sport as the preserve of only men since the nation abounds in a lot of talents of both sexes.

He said that since the nation had achieved enough laurels in boxing but it now seems to be on the downward trend, "it behoves on us all to diversify our attention to break new grounds in the field".

Mr Mahama, who is also the Managing director of B.B. Boxing Club, said this in an interview with the GNA Sports in Kumasi on Wednesday. He regretted that the nation had over the years sacrificed the development of women boxing for other disciplines, saying that, "This had contributed to the misconception about the sport and its attendant consequences".

Mr Mahama pointed out that in order to tap the potential of women boxers in the Ashanti Region, his Club has initiated a programme dubbed "Catch Them Young" which is geared towards identifying and training young girls to blossom into boxing stars.

He said that the Club currently has about 12 girls between the ages of 11 and 15 training daily, and added that it was gratifying that their parents were ready to invest in them.

Meanwhile, the Golden Kids Promotions will on Saturday thrill boxing fans in the Ashanti Region in a boxing extravaganza for eight professional boxers in four weight divisions at the Baba Yara Sports stadium in Kumasi as part of efforts to heighten the people's interest in the sport.

In the featherweight fray, Benjamin Tutu will fight the 'Ashanti pride' Eric Odumase, a UK-based Ghanaian boxer in a six-round contest whiles Tyson Sarfo meets Bawumia So-ha in the lightweight division in a six-round contest.

Samuel Wobil Tembil will face Kojo Issah in a six-round contest in the welterweight division and Baba Clay would pit his strength against Samson Kinkanga in a six-round contest in the light-welterweight fray.
