Stars are not money-conscious - Sports Minister

Sports Minster Dr. Mustapha Ahmed insists most of the Black Stars players are motivated to play for the nation merely not to earn money.

Discussions between the Sports Ministry and the Ghana FA are rife over a planned massive 50% reduction in the winning bonus of the Black Stars.

The Sports Ministry claim they are unable to continue to pay $10,000 to each player for winning competitive matches and thus look to slash this amount to $5000 per player.

There are however reports that the players are vehemently against this move to slash their bonuses, leading to beliefs they are only interested in lining their pockets.

But Sports Minister Dr. Mustapha Ahmed says most of the players are not moved by the monetary gains to play for the nation. “I doubt there are any of the players who are doing it for the money,” he said. “They have a certain passion that is more than the yearning to earn $10,000 or more or less.

“We have had time past where our players played for the love of the country and I believe that in the present day, most of the players play for the love of the country.”
