Ghana’s defeat to Cameroon at the semi-finals of the 2017 AFCON was anticipated due to the difficulty in converting opportunities into goals, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South, Fritz Baffour, has said.
“I was not surprised at all that we lost to Cameroon; it was obvious that our firepower upfront was sloppy, inaccurate and lacked the requisite skills to be lethal,” he noted.
His comment comes on the back of the failure of the senior national team, the Black Stars, to reach the finals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon after suffering a 0-2 defeat to Cameroon on Thursday February 2.
The former Minister of Information revealed that he was an avid sports fan in the country but the passion for the game had dwindled “due to the antics of the players and the woeful overall management of the great game in Ghana”.
He strongly believed that the country needed to strengthen its league and build the core of the national teams with players from the local league.
Additionally, he called for the revival of football and athletics at the lower levels of education to unearth talents which can be groomed to have enough options for the national teams.
“I strongly believe in concentrating on a squad of players drawn from the local league to form the basis of a new Black Stars. We must also encourage and support school and college soccer competitions, because that is where the talents lie,” he added on a post in his Facebook wall on Friday, February 3.
