Stars slip to 20th position in latest FIFA rankings

Accra, July 2, GNA - Ghana's Black Stars has dropped four places to the 20th position in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola rankings. According to the rankings released on Wednesday by the World Soccer governing body, FIFA, gathered by GNA Sports, the Stars who pegged at the 16th position in June with 986 points slipped to the 20th position on 885 points.

Nine points out of a possible twelve last June in the first round of the qualifying round for the 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations was not enough to give the Stars a push.

The downward movement of the Stars was aided by the rise of Scotland, Bulgaria and Greece, occupants of the 16th, 17th and 18th positions respectively.

Ghana, however, maintained her position as the second best ranked team on the African continent behind Cameroon who also retained their 13th position globally.

The latest ranking means that the Stars have dropped six places in the last four months after a historic 14th position in March. European champions, Spain snatched the first position from World Champions, Italy who slipped to second with Germany, Brazil, Netherlands, Argentina, Croatia and Czech Republic in that order.

Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Tunisia and Mali make up the first ten in Africa. The next rankings will be released on August 6.
