Stars soccer fiesta: Musicians want Asamoah Gyan to play for them

Striker Asamoah Gyan is once again the centre of attention when Ghana’s foreign based footballers engage the nation’s music stars in this year’s version of the now annual Stars Soccer Fiesta football match at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra on Sunday.

The Sunderland hitman who also collaborated with hiplife star Castro on the award winning ‘African Girls’ song is torn between playing for his fellow footballers for whom he has featured all the past four years or cross carpet to play for the musicians who are counting on him to help reverse their persistent losses in the annual friendly game.

SportsInGhana.com understands a consensus has been reached through which Asamoah will play for the footballers in the first half before concluding the day in the second period in the colours of Ghana’s musicians.

The Stars’ Soccer Fiesta is the brain of Goldstar Consult Ltd and has run during the off-season since it first took place in 2007 at the Carl Reindorf Park in Dansoman. Soccer stars as Stephen Appiah, Laryea Kingston, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan as well top Ghanaian musicians like Samini, Kwaisey Pee, Tinny, VIP, Lord Kenya, Castro, Kwabena Kwabena were all on one field to play a charity soccer match.

Subsequent editions have taken place at El- Wak Stadium (2008), Ohene Djan Stadium (2009) and again at El-Wak Stadium last year.

This year’s event is to raise funds to support colts’ football and charity. A curtain raiser will be between the best select side of colts soccer in Accra versus the best of Tema. There will also be musical performances before, during and after the match.

According to the organizers, this year’s edition is expected to be more attractive than ever before with many of the footballers as well as music stars confirming their presence at the event on Sunday. Sponsored by Tyron, Lucozade Sport, ddp, Melcom Mos Packa, Africa Origin Travel and Sports Tourism and Sidalco Ghana, the programme of festivities commence at 10 am.

Kick-off for the match itself is at 2.30pm with rates of GH?4, GH?6, GH?10, GH?20, GH?30 charged for the various seating arrangements at the stadium which all come with a drink of Lucozade energy drink.

A thanksgiving dinner with all the stars which’s limited tickets goes for GH?100 takes place at Alisa Hotel at 8pm same day at which courtesy Africa Origin Travel and Sports Tourism, two lucky winners will win return tickets to London to watch Ghana versus Nigeria on August 9.
