Swansea reveals why Andre Ayew was in Ghana

Swansea City say Ghana deputy captain Andre Ayew was in Ghana last week when the Black Stars were in international friendly action because he was given some time off by the Welsh club.

While the Black Stars were in action in Washington, Ayew was in Ghana which sparked concerns among some pundits in his country over his commitment to the African national team.

Ayew withdrew from the Ghana squad for their friendly against Canada with a knee injury after taking knocks in the Swans’ most recent games against Southampton and Spurs.

Some reports in the country even suggested that he was only in the country to seek herbal treatment for the knocks he received.

Indeed, despite withdrawing from the international team, it was suggested Ayew had actually returned to Ghana during his few days off to seek treatment.

Swansea claim they had the permission from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to excuse the winger from international action and that they cleared him to travel to Ghana for some days off.

“Andre is fine. Medically it was better he missed those games for Ghana He has been back in training since and he is available for selection for Monday,” said Monk.

“The players who did not go away with their countries had the weekend off, it was up to them if they wanted to travel, but I don’t know how true that story is because he is fit.”

Ayew will return to action for Swansea in their match against Stoke on Monday.
