Tagoe: Medeama can win the league

Medeama SC goalkeeper Muntari Tagoe insists his side can challenge Ghana Premier League leaders Ashantigold FC for the title this season despite an unimpressive showing so far in the campaign.

The Tarkwa-based side have won three matches, recorded four draws after 10 games and are trailing the leaders by nine points.

“It is still too early to tip who will win the league. Only three wins separate us from leaders Ashantigold. We can topple them if we work harder,” Tagoe told Goal.

“This season hasn't been all that bad even though we didn't have a good start as opposed to previous seasons. The league is not out of hands, we’ll fight hard until the end,” he said.

The 25-year-old was unable to guide his team to victory when they travelled to Kumasi last weekend to face defending champions Asante Kotoko in a clash that ended 1-1, which the goalkeeper said could have gone their way.

“That game was supposed to be our win. We dominated play but squandered several clear cut chances. However, that encounter brought back our confidence as a struggling team in the league and we hope to build on that,” he said.

Tagoe also lauded the qualities of his new coach Tom Strand, who joined Medeama after guiding Bechem United to sixth place last season, adding that the Swede will help the team make a difference by the season’s midway point.

“Strand is a very good coach and he is gradually making a mark here. Although we've won few matches, a close look at the table is enough to show that our future is bright. If the players could heed his instructions we’d be able to achieve our objectives of the season,” he said.

Medeama currently lie 10th on the league log with 13 points, and will host Edubiase United at the T&A Park on March 22.
