Takoradi Airforce Base recorded 165 points to win the 2015 Inter-base sports competition which ended at the Asmarah park on Friday, to select a formidable team for the upcoming Ghana Armed Forces Sports festival and the Security Services Games.
In all, they grabbed seven gold and six silver medals to beat Accra Airforce Base which annexed 115 points with three gold, five silver and bronze medals in second position.
Airforce Tamale placed third with 115 point with three gold, two silver and eight bronze medals.
Takoradi also swept a number of the individual awards as John Arthur was adjudged the best male volleyball player; best female volleyball player and best female sportswoman to Cpl. Abigail Adu Danso; LAC V. Mills, best female handball, best male basketball player, Aircraft Man (ACI) Ofori Sarpong, best soccer player, ACI Justus Torsutsey, who also took the best sportsman award.
The best female basketball player award went to LAC Yinamayah of Accra Base, best male cross- country runner, CPL Kassim Mohammed from Accra, best female cross -country, ACI Dinah Saah of Tamale and best female handball player was CPL S. Ankrah, from Accra.
In the final soccer match, Airforce Accra beat Tamale 2-1. They also pulled their opponents twice in the final tug-of-war which generated much anxiety and tension at the Asmarah Park.
In his address, the Guest of Honour, the Director of Administration at the Airforce Headquarters, Group Captain Michael Appiah-Agyekum, congratulated the organizers and the participants for the effort they made in ensuring a successful competition this year, which had yielded the desired results.
He noted that, the standard of discipline was very high and added that, if it was maintained the “sky will be the limit.”
Group Captain Appiah-Agyekum told the participants that the spirit of positive competition,cooperation and comradeship exhibited during the competition was very impressive and commendable, urging them, to be abreast the rules and regulations governing the various disciplines, which would be applied during the upcoming games.
