Team-mates trust me - Jordan Ayew

The Black Stars striker believes he can continue with his performance at the Africa Cup of Nations despite concerns over his output

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew has defended his performance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, claiming his teammates have trust in his abilities.

The Black Stars have qualified to the quarterfinals with a game to spare after a 1-0 victory over Mali on Saturday thanks to Asamoah Gyan's awesome header. Ayew, who provided the assist, was widely criticised for his performance in Ghana’s opener against Uganda.

The Aston Villa striker fluffed several clear-cut chances against the Cranes but put up a better showing against Mali.

“I am always confident because I know the qualities I have. The coach and the players have confidence in me so there is no problem,” Ayew said.

“Two of our stars - my brother Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan- were not hundred per cent fit ahead of the game against Mali so I had to run more and I did that with a good heart and good spirit. This is because I wanted to help my country to win,” he added.

The Black Stars had their recovery training on Sunday, with Andre Ayew missing the session due to a knock picked against Mali. He will be accessed by the medical team on Monday, according to reports.

Avram Grant's men will face Egypt in Group D’s final game on Wednesday.
