Telkom Set to Defend African Title in Accra

Telkom women's hockey team (Kenya) was due to leave yesterday for Accra, Ghana.

The team will defend the Africa club championships title which they won for the second time in Egypt last year.

The team got a big boost when they beat visiting South African hockey team to the Military Games 5-0 at the City Park Stadium on Thursday.

Goalkeeper Josephine Ataro is captain of the team which has had no major changes for the past six years.

New inclusions are Judy Apiyo and Jacqueline Ogot.

Kenya's other representatives to the continental championships, Sliders, who finished third in Egypt last yea, have been knocked after failing to raise enough money to make the trip.

Hosts Ghana will field two teams with South Africa, Namibia and Egypt also sending sides.

The men's team, Armed Forces are busy with the Military Games and have also opted out.

In the Telkom side travelling to Ghana are: Josephine Ataro, Suzane Odongo, Ursla Kiniga, Florence Olal, Wendy Ekumba, Vicky Ogongo, Judy Apiyo, Jane Nyamogo, Rose Mbulo, Jacky Atieno, Jacqueline Ogot, Catherine Wekhomba, Margaret Akinyi and Betty Tioni. The officials are Sandy Mukhwana, Joseph Ndambuki and Betty Masinde.
