Black Queens head coach, Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo believes inviting Ghanaian players playing in Europe for the 2019 WAFU Zone B Women's tournament is not necessary.
Following the decision by the former Black Queens player and now a coach, she decided to limit call-ups of players for the West African Football Union (WAFU) tournament to domestic players and has had a section of the media questioning her decision.
Coach Mercy Tagoe, having been the first Ghanaian female coach to led the Black Queens to clinch gold in the WAFU tournament in 2018, believes there are equally good players in the local scene.
Tagoe, however, looks forward to defending the title in Ivory Coast.
"To talk of foreign-based players, everybody is a good player and some of the locally based players are equally good as the foreign-based players", she said.
"If you have players for all the positions, why then do you go out of the way to invite foreign-based players meanwhile they are busy playing their leagues."
Tagoe invited 30-players to camp ahead of the tournament but will have the squad prone to 24.
Since the team resumed camp in Cape Coast, Tagoe has engaged them in two friendlies with both games won by the Queens. The side beat Combined Forces 12-0 at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday.
This year's WAFU will be held in Ivory Coast on May 8.
Hosts Cote d’Ivoire are pooled in Group A alongside Niger, Senegal and Benin Republic for the second edition of the tournament.
While in Group A, defending champions Ghana will face Mali, reigning African queens Nigeria and Guinea.
