The Deputy General Secretary of CAF in-charge of Football and Development, Tony Baffoe has expressed satisfaction with the level football displayed at the 2018 Africa Cup of Nations tournament currently happening in Ghana.

The final round of group matches was played on Saturday with defending champions Nigeria, South Africa, Mali and Cameroon making it to the semis.

Hosts, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Algeria and Gambia failed to progress to the next round.

Speaking at a program held by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana in collaboration with the Association of International Press on Monday, November 26, the former Ghana international noted that the 8 nations have sold out great football which is a mark of the progress women’s football is making on the continent.

He commended the countries for lifting up their game and praised the Local Organizing Committee of the tournament for overcoming the initial challenges to deliver what in his estimation has been an impressive tournament.

Baffoe who doubles as the president of the Ghana chapter of the Professional Footballers Association held that CAF has started implementing some the resolutions made at a women’s football conference two years ago and that the result will be seen across all African countries soon.

“To be honest, I’m very happy with the level of football which has been played here at the 11th edition of the Women’s AFCON. Nigeria was always far away but I think the gap has been closed. If you look at the African confederations, the affiliates are 54 countries out of that only 20 participated in the qualifiers. So this should be some food for thought for all of you. To the LOC, things started slowly and have improved massively”, he said.

The first semi-final game of the ongoing tournament which is between the Falcons of Nigeria and Cameroon will be played tomorrow, November 27 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The second semi-final will be played on Wednesday with the final set for Sunday at Accra Sports Stadium.
