Trophy-less play with Stars my “greatest regret” – Appiah

Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah says his greatest regret in life is his failure to win a trophy for the senior national football team during his 12-year play with the team.

The former Juventus and Brescia midfielder who announced his retirement from football in January 2015, made history in 2006 after leading Ghana to its first World Cup competition in Germany.

The hardworking enforcer who made his debut for Ghana back in 2000 under Guiseppe Doseena won several laurels in his career at club level with several European clubs including Juventus and Fenebache, but failed to replicate that feat with the national team in a career that lasted for more than a decade.

“I played at the World Cup and that is good, but as a footballer my biggest regret is that I didn’t win anything with the Black Stars during my career,” Appiah said.

He nonetheless said he has been able to achieve some modest laurels during his career.

“Seeing my career, I think that I was so blessed from God. I think that there are a lot of players who started well, but couldn’t do what I did in my career so that’s positive,” Appiah told Henry Asante Twum on Extra Time on Saturday.

Stephen Appiah who retired from international football after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa at the age of 30 played at only two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (2000 and 2006).
