Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has revealed that accusations of being transgender, made on social media by US Presidential candidate Donald Trump and X CEO Elon Musk, have deeply hurt her.
She expressed that the public's harsh reactions to these accusations during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games were emotionally distressing.
Khelif emphasized that the accusations are baseless, as she was born and raised female and has been cleared by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete in the women's boxing division.
"What Trump and Elon Musk said really affected me. It hurt me a lot. I can't describe the fear I felt. I was afraid people would question why Khelif insisted on this and why there was such an uproar from politicians worldwide.
"But thank God I was able to overcome that stage, with the help of my specialists," she said in a video shared by American influencer Mario Nawfal on X on August 14, 2024.
Khelif has taken legal action against Elon Musk and others who spread false information about her being transgender, filing a lawsuit with French authorities.
The two personalities criticized the boxer after it was alleged that she was transgender.
The findings from the investigations are yet to be disclosed.
Khelif won gold in the women's boxing division at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
She gained widespread attention for her dominant performance, despite failing a gender test the previous year.
