Two Ghanaians picked up for doping control test

(By Veronica Commey, GNA Special correspondent in Wurzburg, Germany)

Wurzburg, June 15, GNA - Two Ghanaian players were picked up on Monday for doping control tests after the Black Stars 0-2 loss to Italy in Hanover.

The results of the tests have however not yet been released. Dr Martin Engmann, Team Doctor said the results were being awaited from the medical team of FIFA.

Dr Engmann was however tight-lipped about the names of the players picked for the tests, but indicated that they are all defenders. He told the GNA Sports in Wurzburg, "I do not expect any adverse findings' as the results are expected before the next game against the Czech Republic on Saturday".

The exercise is a mandatory one conducted by FIFA after every match as part of its efforts to eliminate the use of substances that enhance performances and which the World Football Controlling Body has banned. The rules of the competition stipulate that four players from each team will be picked after every game while two of them will be tested and the remaining two put on standby.

A sample each is withdrawn from specimen A and B with the former tested first and the later held in stock and tested later in case of any adverse findings.

Football Associations are informed about adverse findings, if any, to enable them to appeal or explain themselves.

Meanwhile, four other players went under an unannounced doping control test prior to the Stars game against the Azzuris on Monday. The quartet - Asamoah Gyan, Haminu Dramani, Issah Ahmed and Eric Addo were tested before kick off.
