Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Mitch Apau scored the consolation goal for Westerlo when they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against visiting Zulte-Waregem in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday.

The 25-year-old lateral defender fired his side upfront with a remarkable effort in the 34th minute but his effort was cancelled out the visiting Waregem who emerged with the three points.

The former RKC Waalwijk player, started the attack from his side of defence and raced into the box, played a sweet one-two with the experienced Benjamin De Ceulaer whose flicking backheel found Apau in space and he hammered a powerful effort which went against the far post before crawling in.

Apau, born in the Netherlands to Ghanaian parents, has expressed interest in playing for the Ghana national team but he has not been officially contacted by the Ghana FA.

The goal is his second of the season in 24 appearances for Westerlo.
