Ghana’s Mubarak Wakaso is only a goal away from being crowned the top scorer at the concluding Africa Cup of Nations after sprinting to the apex of the chart with four goals.
Wakaso who scored Ghana’s only goal in regulation time in the semi-final defeat to Burkina Faso in Nelspruit on Wednesday is tied Nigerian Emmanuel Emenike on top of the chart with four goals each.
The debutant has found the back of the net three times from the spot and another from open play in five games and could wrap up the Golden Boot award if he scores again at the third-place match against Mali on Saturday in Port Elizabeth and Emenike’s fails to score in the final 24-hours later.
Wakaso scored from the spot in the second group game against Mali, converted another penalty against Cape Verde and added another in open play against the Islanders before bagging his last from the spot against the Stallions of Burkina Faso.
The Espanyol player remains one of Ghana’s best players at the tournament which the Black Stars were hoping to win to end the county’s wait for a fifth Nations Cup glory.
The player started in all four games but one and sat out of the knockout game with Cape Verde due to card accumulation.
