Wakaso joins Rubin Kazan

Mubarak Wakaso has left La Liga for Rubin Kazan, having bid his Espanyol teammates farewell today.

The 23-year-old Ghana international has been the subject of negotiations between the Russians and his Catalan employers this summer and yesterday evening it was believed that a €6m deal was agreed.

The player, who is set to pen a four-year deal with Rubin, cleared out his belongings at Espanyol’s headquarters today before bidding farewell to teammates.

On from this, Espanyol have confirmed his sale to the Russians, ending a single season stint at Cornella-El Prat, running quotes from the player.

“I want to apologise to the club, the players and the fans, because I asked to leave even as they did not want me to go,” Wakaso has said.

“It was an opportunity for my future. When I received the offer, I spoke many times to the President to ask him to accept it, it was important to me.

“I am grateful to the club, the fans, the Coaches and the players, this year at Espanyol I have greatly improved and I have learned a lot here.”

Reportedly set to see his current earnings quadrupled, Wakaso is seen as having also turned down a contract renewal earlier this summer from Los Pericos in preference of arranging this move out.

Espanyol are understood to be unlikely to see much of the transfer fee, with €1m set to go to previous team Villarreal and the remaining €5m likely to help fund an upcoming payment due to the Hacienda, the Spanish tax authorities
