Mubarak Wakaso has underlined Deportivo Alaves' ambition in the 2018/19 Spanish La Liga following their 3-0 defeat against Real Madrid on Sunday.

Following a promising start to the Spanish La Liga, El Glorioso have endured a torrid time in recent time after picking a win in their last five games.

The Vitoria-Gasteiz-based club were hoping to record a league double over Real Madrid when they clashed at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

But goals from Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior and Mariano Diaz helped Los Merengues to victory.

Despite the defeat, Wakaso believes the performance they have exhibited in the season should be enough to guarantee them a place in next season's Europa League campaign.

"To be honest, our minds were on surviving in the division when we started the league but the form we've shown in the season so far has changed our mindset and we're now aiming to pick one of the Europa League slots. It's been a great season so far," says Wakaso.

Abelardo Fernández's last featured in the Europa League in 2001 when they were beaten 5-4 after extra time by English giants Liverpool FC.

Alaves will return to action on Monday when they welcome UD Levante to the Mendizorrotza Stadium.
