Waris relieved to have ended goal drought

Striker Abdul Majeed Waris has heaved a sigh of relief after ending his 12-month goal-drought for the Ghana national team.

Waris was on target when Ghana beat Egypt 6-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in a 2014 FIFA World Cup play-off qualifier in October last year.

On Wednesday, he opened the scoring on 23 minutes when he headed past Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa as the Black Stars went on to win 3-1 to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Two weeks ago, Waris opened his goal scoring account for his Turkish side Trabzonspor when he snatched the equalizer in their 1-1 draw with Lokeren in the Europa League.

Waris said he knew he was going to find his scoring boots again during his barren spell.

“I have always believed that as long as you keep working hard the goals will come. As long as I was getting the game time I knew I will score,” Waris said.
