Wednesday, July 18, 2024, marked the maiden edition of the Democracy Cup football match.

Held at the Accra Sports Stadium, a thrilling encounter between Members of Parliament and staff of the legislative house, against former players of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, served as a curtain raiser for the main match.

The parliamentary select side triumphed over the former professionals by 3 goals to 1.

Some of the players who found the back of the net include Patrick Boateng, who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute.

After the break, Sulley Muntari curved a shot over an 8-man wall to net an equalizer in the 64th minute.

Mensah extended the lead for the parliamentary select side in the 77th minute before adding a second eight minutes later.

The day ended with Kumasi Asante Kotoko beating Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 to win the maiden Democracy Cup.

The Democracy Cup is an annual event instituted to promote and consolidate Ghana’s parliamentary democracy through sports.
