Black Stars captain Andre Ayew was visibly emotional as he received a standing ovation from Marseille fans during the club’s dominant 5-1 victory over Le Havre in the French Ligue 1 on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
Facing his former side at the stadium where he spent five seasons was always going to be a touching moment for Ayew, and the home fans made sure to honour the player they once cheered for.
Although Le Havre found themselves 5-0 down with 15 minutes remaining, Ayew managed to score a consolation goal for Les Ciel et Marine, heading the ball into the top corner with just five minutes left on the clock.
In a gesture of respect, Ayew refrained from celebrating his goal against his former team, earning applause from every corner of the Stade Vélodrome.
The goal marked Ayew’s first at the stadium in nearly 15 years, with his last strike at the stadium coming in May 2015 when he played for Marseille.
It was also the 35-year-old’s first goal of the 2024/25 season after nine league appearances.
With just two minutes left in the game, Ayew was substituted.
As he walked off the pitch, he was greeted by another heartfelt standing ovation from the fans, a moment that brought the forward to tears.
Ayew spent five seasons at Marseille after joining from Lorient in 2009.
Over the course of his time at the club, he played over 160 matches in Ligue 1, scoring 44 goals and cementing his legendary status at the club.
