Former head coach of the Black Stars, Charles Kwabena Akunnor, has said that the attention given to the national team by sporting authorities in the country has become excessive.

According to him, although the Black Stars are mostly cherished by the public when they do well, there is a need for other sporting events to be given the needed attention.

The former Accra Hearts of Oak gaffer lamented about how the sporting authorities are not investing much in nurturing youthful talents to improve the fortunes of the sport.

CK Akunnor called for measures to be put in place to ensure that youth development programmes are prioritized instead of the sole focus on the Black Stars, which has contributed to the poor performances of the various national teams.

“I think we focus on the Black Stars too much. We have left our youth development behind. We have the potential to be better, and we need to do something drastic with all urgency,” he said, as shared by JoySports on X.

He commented following the Black Stars’ disastrous performance against Sudan in the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, losing 2-0 in the return leg in Libya.

After four matches played, Ghana are third in Group F with two points, Sudan is in second place with seven points, while Angola leads with twelve points.

The Black Stars will travel to face Angola and play the last match against Niger in Ghana in November 2024.
