We’re not thinking of revenge – Jordan

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew has said Sunday's Africa Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast will not be a revenge for the 1992 defeat his father suffered at the hands of the Elephants.

Legendary Abedi Ayew Pele was suspended in the Senegal 1992 Afcon final and watched from the stands as Ghana lost to Ivory Coast in a marathon penalty shootout.

Jordan said he and his brother (Andre) will not have that at the back of their minds when they walk on to the pitch to face Herve Renard’s charges in Bata.

“We are just happy to be in the final, and I am sure that we made the whole country happy,” the Lorient striker told fifa.com.

“We want to win the game on Sunday not because of 1992, but because we have not won [an AFCON] since 1982,” he said. “When I come to the Black Stars, it is all about the team. When I am in Europe with my club, then my personal aspect matters, but with the national team, it is only the squad that matters.”

Ghana will be hoping to end over three decades of trophy-drought on Sunday and win their fifth Africa Cup of Nations crown.
