The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government will ensure the payment of stipends to players in the Ghana Premier League.

In recent years, the lack of payment for Ghana Premier League players has been a major factor leading to players leaving the domestic league in search of better opportunities with higher salaries.

Former President John Mahama has promised that the NDC will address this issue by providing stipends to players in the domestic league.

"I would also like to assure the sports community that we will improve our stadium infrastructure for track and field sports, upgrade our deteriorating pitches, and provide stipends to footballers in the Premier League," he stated.

Mahama shared his views at the Media Encounter held on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

He further emphasized, "We will give equal attention to what we consider to be the least-funded sports, just as we have done for soccer."

The NDC initially made the commitment to pay player stipends in 2020, stating that they would offer a monthly salary of GH¢1,500 to GPL players.
