WEST HAM are reportedly set to make a move for Ghana defender John Mensah – who is available on a free transfer.
Not happy with the 11 players already brought in during the last transfer window – including a spectacular move to sign Andy Carroll from Liverpool on loan – West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is keen to strengthen his team even further.
Allardyce has acknowledged that he needs to improve his defence options – currently only having Winston Reid, James Tomkins and James Collins to choose from – and Mensah is said to be his new target.
Mensah, 29, who has a wealth of experience following a successful season on loan at Sunderland last year, is hoping to finalise his future over the international break after ending his contract with Lyon during the summer.
Disappointingly for the star, he was released from his contract without making a single top-team appearance last season for the Ligue 1 outfit.
A combination of injury and the lack of trust from Lyon’s contributed to his season in the shadows even though he was key for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations.
As a free agent Mensah's able to negotiate with any club despite the transfer window closing on Friday night and West Ham are reportedly keen to strike a deal as soon as possible.
