Ghana has a rich footballing history and many of the nation’s top players have moved to top leagues around the world to play. Many football fans see the English Premier League as the pinnacle of club football.

John Mensah – Sunderland

Prior to his move to England, Mensah had been voted Ghana Player of the Year in 2006 while at Rennes. Hopes were high he would be a significant defensive force for the Black Cats.

Sulley Muntari - Portsmouth/Sunderland

Sulley Muntari came through Udinese’s youth team in Italy at the turn of the millennium. He starred for the Zebrette and played in 125 games as a holding midfielder.

Muntari’s play didn’t go unnoticed and in 2007, Udinese received a club record transfer fee of £7.1 million for him from Portsmouth. The defensive midfielder was instrumental in his one and only season at Portsmouth as he played 33 times in all competitions scoring five goals helping the club win the FA Cup.

He went on two have two highly successful seasons at Inter Milan where he won the 2010 Champions League Final.

Asamoah Gyan – Sunderland

Sunderland have long had their eyes on Ghanaian players, and in 2010 following a brilliant World Cup, they snapped up striker Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan was a club record signing at £13m from French club Rennes. The striker’s first season was a success as he bagged 11 goals in 33 games in all competitions. Ten of those goals came in the Premier League.

He played just four games during the 2011-12 season and was loaned to Al Ain.

Tony Yeboah – Leeds United

Tony Yeboah won the 1997 Ghana Player of the Year award while playing for Germany’s Hamburg SV. The award came to him after moving from Premier League side Leeds United where he became a household name in Yorkshire.

The forward bagged 13 goals in 20 games in all competitions his first season after joining from Eintracht Frankfurt.

He followed it up with 19 in 39 matches the next term. Had he stayed at Leeds United, he could have been a club legend.

Michael Essien – Chelsea

Power and grace are two words that perfectly sum up former Chelsea superstar Michael Essien. The defensive midfielder was an unbelievable talent while at Stamford Bridge and many of Chelsea’s defences were made better by Essien’s presence in front of them.

He only scored 25 goals in 256 games in all competitions, but Essien’s play wasn’t about scoring goals. His play in 2006-07 won him the Ghana Player of the Year award recognising his achievements as a defensive midfield master.
