The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum, has explained why the Confederation of African Football banned the Cape Coast Stadium from hosting Black Stars matches.

Initially, the stadium was used for qualifiers and friendlies due to its good condition after construction.

However, the pitch was severely damaged during the 2022 Independence Day parade and could not be properly maintained afterwards.

In an interview with Angel FM, Asante Twum said, "We used the Cape Coast Stadium for Black Stars matches from 2021 to March 2022. However, during the 6th March Independence Day Parade that was held in the stadium, the pitch was heavily impacted negatively. Due to that, CAF disapproved the Cape Coast stadium for Black Stars matches, including the World Cup play-off match with Nigeria in 2022."

This situation follows CAF's ban on the Baba Yara Stadium due to poor facilities, prompting the GFA to seek alternative venues.

The GFA has yet to submit the Legon Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium to CAF for consideration.

The poor maintenance of pitches in Ghana has been a point of criticism among many in the country.
