Why Ernest Nuamah's last-minute Fulham transfer collapsed

Ernest Nuamah's anticipated move from Olympique Lyonnais to Fulham dramatically fell through at the last minute, with L’Équipe revealing the reasons behind the failed transfer.

Fulham had been eager to secure the Ghanaian winger, even hijacking a potential deal with Everton, and had reportedly agreed terms with Lyon. However, the deal was abruptly called off due to "new issues," according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

L’Équipe has now disclosed that Nuamah himself refused the move to Craven Cottage, expressing his unwillingness to leave Lyon, especially since the Ligue 1 club had not found a replacement. "He loves Lyon," his management told L’Équipe.

Despite the failed transfer, Nuamah's career took a different turn on 30 August 2023, when he joined Belgian side RWD Molenbeek before being immediately loaned back to Lyon for the rest of the season. The loan deal included a purchase option worth €25 million, plus €4.5 million in potential add-ons.

Nuamah made a significant impact during his loan spell, making 29 appearances, scoring three goals, and providing two assists in Ligue 1 last season. His current market value is estimated at €18 million by Transfermarkt.

On 7 July 2024, Lyon announced the permanent transfer of Nuamah from RWD Molenbeek for a reported fee of €28.5 million, securing the talented forward's future with the club.
