General Manager of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club Nana Akwasi Gyambibi, popularly known as ‘Coker’ has explained the club’s decision to adopt the Accra Sports Stadium as their home venue for the remainder of the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League season.

This comes after the National Sports Authority (NSA) announced on Monday that the Baba Yara Sports Stadium has temporally been closed down.

In a statement, the NSA said “the closure is to enable the NSA and Ministry of Youth and Sports to have ample and uninterrupted time to fix critical places of the stadium before the celebration of Ghana’s 63rd Independence Anniversary Celebration.”

This has forced Kotoko, who play their home games at the venue, to adopt the Accra Sports stadium as their new home ground.

The decision has not sat down well with both connoisseurs and fans of the club with some questioning the wisdom behind the choice.

According to the General Manager, the team has a huge fan base in Accra which also influenced the decision to choose the Accra Sports Stadium

“We chose Accra over other places due to the fact that we believed we have a lot of supporters in the Greater Accra region and in terms of travelling we felt Accra is the most convenient place” he told Kumasi-based radio station Ashh FM.

“We are not bothered by the fact that Hearts of Oak plays at that same venue, we believe we can survive there”

He also revealed that Asante Kotoko will want all their games to be held in the evening.

“We have arranged and talks are in place to inform the FA so that all our home games will be played at night under the flood light

“This is purely management decision but there is a supporter’s leader who is also part of management and by so doing there wasn’t any need to involve supporters” he concluded.
