Former Accra Hearts of Oak forward, Charles Taylor Asampong, has slammed the head coach of the Sudanese national team, Kwasi Appiah, over what he considers to be his failure to resign permanently from his position as a member of the Executive Council (Exco) of the Ghana Football Association.
While Charles Taylor welcomes Kwasi Appiah’s decision to step aside, he believes that he should have vacated his position permanently.
Charles Taylor holds that Appiah should have quit the role immediately after his team was paired in the same group as Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
In the view of Charles Taylor, Kwasi Appiah’s attitude smacks of greed, which he believes is a character trait of most Ghanaian leaders.
“I’m happy he has resigned now, but if he did that earlier, there’d be no issues. He should resign permanently from the position. Ghanaians want to enjoy on all fronts, but that’s greed. He should leave the Exco and allow the FA to find a replacement. How can he combine the two jobs? It’s good he has resigned, but he should have done so earlier,” he said.
On Monday, October 7, 2024, Kwasi Appiah announced his temporary resignation from the GFA Executive Council.
His decision follows a directive from the Confederation of African Football, which asked him to make a choice between the GFA job and the Sudan coaching job.
“Coach Kwasi Appiah has temporarily stepped aside as Executive Council Member of the GFA until the end of November 2024. In response to CAF, copied to GFA, he cited conflict of interest as the reason. Since the start of AFCON qualifiers, Appiah has excused himself from all Exco activities,” Asante Forkuo, an aide to Kwasi Appiah, shared on X on October 7, 2024.
Kwasi Appiah is meanwhile preparing his Sudan team to play the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 10, 2024.
